Cryptosporidium

Cryptosporidium is a chlorine-resistant protozoan that has been the plague of the water treatment industry for decades.

Part of an extremely hardy family of protozoa, cryptosporidium has the ability to form a hardened exterior, or cyst, around its cells, making it resistant to the disinfecting powers of chlorine.

While it does not normally occur in drinking water, municipal water treatment facilities have no way to remove it from water when it does contaminate.

Ingestion of cryptosporidium generally results in gastrointestinal illness.
